Re: MEAD
If you are ever in downtown Zwolle (Netherlands) Café De Pul sells mead by the horn, its a Dutch Gelderlander brew.

Re: MEAD
One of my favorite bands, "Amon Amarth" made a video that's on YouTube about how to make mead. It wasn't fancy at all; use a milk jug as the container, honey, water and baking yeast. So, I made my own batch of mead (only using higher quality, plastic containers). I made 2 gallons worth, and I must say, it was more like hard liquor then honey wine. I suspect the baking yeast fermented too much sugar from the honey, making it very strong and dry. I had a fun time drinking it though!

Re: MEAD
Well most forms of alcohol have a very pleasant, inviting sound to the name. But, if I made it anything like that, I'd feel like I was lying xD "Shit-that-will-get-you-smashed" seems to be the best idea

Re: MEAD
One of the tricky things about using baker's yeast is that it doesn't die when you reach a specific alcohol content like brewer's yeasts do. That's why you'll end up with that strong alcohol taste like your drinking spirits or something. I use champagne yeast in mine, although many professional mead brewers use a yeast intended for white wines.

Re: MEAD
Ive had good success with Joe's ancient orange mead recipe at gotmead.com
its a simple recipe that is ready in about 2 months. its easy to make variants of also.
i saw the amon amarth video. i'd be hesitant using milk jugs as the alcohol may pull too many PCB's out of the plastic jug.

Re: MEAD
Stick to sterilised demi-johns and bungs
Honey's expensive to lose the lot to Vinegar fly
there's no hard and fast rules to making mead so experiment as long as there's about 4lb of honey in a demijohn full of warm water and some yeast - kept sterilised with an airlock Mead will occur
It's good to try adding flavours - Orange mead is indeed tasty, Lemon mead and herbal mead are also good..It can be cut with wine or even Port - oh my the variations are endless..
and the best of all you get to drink the result
