John T Mainer wrote:Our ancestors did not live their lives as the Egyptians, Jews, or contemporary Christians and Muslims do; attempting to secure a theoretical afterlife. Rather than spending an entire life that is real, making choices to purchase a place in an afterlife which is a theory at best, our ancestors chose to embrace this life, to do with every moment the very best they could.

Pascal's Wager and Heathenry
Re: Pascal's Wager
Could it be that humans adapt to their environment and that if Christians, Jews, and Muslims had lived in a colder environment they would act more as Heathens and adopt customs that resembled Heathenry.
When Iceland was young, the people who were moving there were Norse who had already converted to Christianity as well as some people from the British Isles. Although they were Christian, they continued to practice some aspects from the old culture and were scoffed at by other Christians for this. One of the things they did was to cremate their dead, as their ancestors had rather than bury them as instructed in the Bible. I wonder if those who wrote the Bible were thinking how hard it would be to dig a six foot hole through permafrost.
Those who adapt to their environment flourish, those who can't perish.
