Well of course, but once they have passed they take on a more important role as protectors, examples and spirits

this is a good video about how the old ones would have looked favorably upon death (of course preferably after living a good life)

Re: The Heathen Worldview
I've always wondered how something could be dead and then protect things. I would think they'd have to be alive to do that. I've always found the term "afterlife" to be strange. When I think of dead, I think of not living. A spirit or wight that does things and is active doesn't seem like a dead thing, it seems to be alive just in different form than a mortal being.

Re: The Heathen Worldview
Anyway, back on topic.
Heathen Worldview.
Imo, the heathen worldview involves personal responsibility, pragmatism, metaphors, social contracts, honor, and self-preservation(not individual self, but tribal/family).
I think the heathen worldview focuses more on the group than the individual, which is why heathenry is more communal/social than solitary.

Re: The Heathen Worldview
I would say worldviews for one. There was never one unified worldview among heathens. Due to the fact that time and place and many extenuating factors and syncretism on borderzones made it impossible to have a single worldview (actually, I think such a thing never existed).Bathilde
How would you describe the heathen worldview?
Of course there were shared themes between the various WVs, but each folk, social rank and social unit shared a differing view on many of these concepts.
Furthermore, when we die we go in the ground (if that's what you want)... you live on in some capacity, I would say in memory mostly, in the grave and through a gifting relationship between man and ancestor, some providence was shown upon the living... if they are lucky.
This whole thing about dying and going with the gods is BS pure and simple. Maybe some people believed they were going to such halls or their family thought they were. But when it comes to meeting the dead and gifting them... they always end up at the graveyard... funny how that works. So the dead are in the ground and stay there, unless draugr or during the wildhunt (depending upon culture).
